He’s no kid anymore, but you can call him a two-time Stanley Cup champion. The Pittsburgh Penguins shut down the San Jose Sharks to win the 2016 Stanley Cup in six games Sunday night. With a Conn Smythe award under his belt, it’s safe to say the already strong market for Sidney Crosby rookie cards will have a little more sizzle.
Crosby, who will turn 29 this off-season, finished the Stanley Cup playoffs with six goals and 13 assists including one that set up the game-winning goal on Sunday in San Jose. He’s no longer putting up the statistical numbers he was known for in his early years but has evolved into what coach Mike Sullivan calls “the consummate leader.”
Crosby rookie cards arrived in 2005-06 and include several numbered, autographed cards from various Upper Deck brands but there’s no question the best Crosby rookie is the 2005-06 The Cup auto patch, numbered to 99. That low print run means they don’t come up for sale very often and when they do, bidders with deep pockets are usually in on the action.
Other top Crosby rookie cards include serial numbered and autographed cards in Ice, Ultimate Collection, Hot Prospects and SP Authentic. Despite his likely path to the Hockey Hall of Fame, there are still numerous, high quality Crosby autographed rookie cards—some graded—that can be obtained for under $1,000—at least for now. He’s also in numerous lower end brands with base cards selling for prices well within most collectors’ budgets.
Crosby, a native of Cole Harbour, N.S., also won the Cup with the Penguins in 2009. He adds the second Stanley Cup to a career that also includes two Olympic gold medals.
The Cole Harbour, N.S., native was a leader on and off the ice for Pittsburgh throughout the playoffs and finished the tournament with six goals and 13 assists.
While jerseys, pucks and other items with Crosby’s distinctive signature have been hot, here’s an up-to-the-minute look at the most watched Sidney Crosby rookie cards offered in eBay auctions.
