Another week at the shop has passed and the cards are still coming in by the hundreds. Each day has offered more opportunities to buy from collectors or those who’ve finally gotten around to liquidating that box of stuff in the closet. Prices have dipped for some issues and summer’s arrival means there’s a need for cash.
As I’ve mentioned in some recent Shop Talk pieces, that’s right in my wheelhouse and I’m more than happy to oblige anyone looking to sell cards to us.
We had anything from guys bringing in old yellowing binders full of basically just 2019 Donruss Football to other regular customers bringing in Pelican cases full of $1,000 and up cards. For the record, we bought from both guys.
We bought the $20 binder and we also bought a number of nice cards from the Pelican case including PSA 10 Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and numerous other rookies.
We also have an older gentleman who comes in from a few towns over who somehow has a never-ending inventory of Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Fernando Tatis Jr rookie cards. This time around he had Vlad Topps Chrome Refractor rookies, multiple Tatis Jr. Topps and Topps Chrome rookies, low numbered rookies and a plethora of other great cards. He brings us cards about once a week and never disappoints.
Speaking of not disappointing, one of our young regulars came in this week and opened a few blasters and the hobby box or two in store.
In his 2020 Select Football blaster, he pulled a Patrick Mahomes Silver and number of nice rookies including a Joe Burrow. Select has been a really fun product to see opened with very few, if any, of the boxes in any of the forms letting customers down. Through a great number of inserts, the rookies and a number of colors, die cuts and other parallels, customers have feasted on them.
He also opened a new Prizm Soccer blaster and scored a goal, goal, goal goal, goal, goal, with a Kaboom Dele Alli.
He didn’t exactly rip his shirt off and slide across the store on his knees but he was pretty excited as we all were. If you’re not familiar, the Kaboom cards are case hits and among the most popular inserts across Panini’s multiple product lines.
The final product he ripped open was a 2020-21 Court Kings Basketball box. He shot a bit of a brick with this one. His best hit was an honest to goodness, actual game used card of Kawhi Leonard from the Artistic Endeavors subset. His rookies were Grant Riller and R.J. Hampton with the autograph being Skylar Mays. Ouch.
We did see the newest iteration of the TriStar Hidden Treasures full size autographed football helmets.
A customer who bought our entire case of the last series one by one, opened two and hit a Houston Texans autographed helmet of DeAndre Hopkins and a nicely inscribed Philadelphia Eagles helmet of retired fan favorite Ron Jaworski.
Certainly a better outcome than the helmets and jerseys we saw last time around.
This week also saw a number of new releases arrive in store including 2021 Panini Legacy Football and 2021 Panini Contenders Draft Picks football.
While the season is still a ways off, collectors are really anxious to be able to dip into 2021-branded products and snare some early rookie cards.
All in all, we are still incredibly busy online and still really steady in store. It’s still a great time to be a part of this amazing hobby.
Have a great week and I’ll check in again soon.
