Dan, who’s been a long time customer of the shop, has had a really hot hand over the last week to 10 days, starting with him buying the last Upper Deck Hockey tin on our shelf. As I’ve said before, he’s not one to leave the last pack in an open box or the last box on the shelf, which led to him opening this tin. He actually pulled the white-hot Connor Bedard Young Guns rookie card.
This doesn’t happen very often, so we are all really excited to see him pull the biggest rookie chase in the sport at the moment. Dan’s goid fortune continued into golf and his Young Guns pulls kept coming as he pulled one of the hottest young players in the game, Viktor Hovland, later in the week.
My daughter Isabella and I made the trip to the Susquehanna Valley Mall card show. This is an event that used to only take place a handful of times a year. Now there is seemingly a card show there every month. I’m not complaining about it all. In fact, this one was as busy as any, with upwards of 100 tables, similar to the time that Izzy and I set up ourselves at this very show.
Wherever we go, she’s the star.
We bumped into a number of people we know, so I didn’t get to look around as much as I would have liked to, but it’s all good as I’m sure there’ll be a show again soon.
I also made my way to the Philly Show the weekend prior and picked up a big PC card. It’s the first time I’ve ever owned a 1963 Topps Pete Rose rookie card and like in most cases when I’m buying, I saw it at the second table in the entire place and decided to pull the trigger. I managed to get it for a nice percentage off the $600 price tag. I couldn’t pass up on the low grade rookie card of The Hit King.
On Thursday, I made the trip about 20 minutes a way to visit a hobby friend. I was in need of some graded cards for certain products we sell and also to help certain customers with their requests. My buddy and his boss from another job, Karl, were kind enough to meet me on their day off, so I drove out to meet them. Karl brought about 600 slabs for me to look through. I managed to find a number that I could use at the price point that was more than fair. We made a nice little deal. I’m hoping this can continue as I’ll continue to need slabs in this price point.
As I’ve mentioned plenty of times in this piece before, I’ve been a big fan of Shohei Ohtani. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the news that broke last werk about his apparent association with some shady gambling dealings. I’m not sure we will ever know exactly what happened or what’s going on. Regardless, it is definitely a huge black eye on the most impactful player the game has seen in many years. We know little to nothing about the great athletes we admire from afar so, we can never be totally shocked when anything happens, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little surprised when so much news started breaking about Ohtani- from his marriage to bomb threats to gambling and God knows what else. Either way, it will be incredibly interesting to see how this story plays out and if Ohtani isn’t as involved as it appears for now, what, if anything, Major League Baseball will do.
Still, some are screaming that it will be the biggest cover-up in sports history and others are expecting his downfall. As a huge fan, I’m incredibly curious to see how this story plays out over the coming weeks and months.
Well, that about wraps up my week–or two. My apologies for not getting in contact with our readers in a while. I’ll do my best to check back in again soon.
