A year after it sold a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle graded SGC 9.5 for a record smashing $12.6 million, Heritage Auctions will offer a similar gem that’s also expected to bring a price well into the millions.
The company will offer an SGC 9 Mantle in its upcoming Summer Platinum Night Auction. According to Heritage, this card, too, traces its origin to the famous Alan Rosen find of virtually untouched 1952 Topps high numbers in 1986.
The card is one of just two graded 9 by SGC, the only ’52 Mantle cards that take a backseat at SGC to the record setting 9.5 that became the most expensive sports collectible of all-time last August. SGC has graded two others as 8.5. PSA has graded 3 10s, six 9s and 5 at the 8.5 level.
“We’ll make our bold claim here–this card compares favorably to any 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle that exists on the planet, inclusive of that world record SGC 9.5 and the three Gem Mint 10 specimens in the PSA population,” Heritage says in its listing.
An SGC 8 Mantle sold for $600,000 in January.
The auction is scheduled to open July 28.
The card carries a pre-sale estimate of $6 million+. Is a half grade worth $6.6 million? We’ll find out.
