They began in 1959 and continued as a series into 1971 but collectors will notice a certain sameness to the 1966 and 1967 Bazooka baseball sets. The cards were issued on the backs of large size boxes of bubble gum once again and the size of the cards didn’t change. They were still issued three cards per box with perforation marks separating each card. They were, as usual, intended to be cut individually from boxes and most were.
In ’66, Topps expanded the Bazooka set to a total of 48 cards and would return in ’67 with another 48 card set.
The problem for collectors? The bulk of the sets are almost identical–right down to the card numbers.
Unlike the 1963-1965 sets, where players were occasionally assigned the same card number but had a different photo, Topps used the same numbers and pictures for many players in the 1966 and ’67 sets. There are more than three dozen players who have the same picture and number in each set.
Of the 16 three-card panels issued in the two sets, half are exactly the same. On two other panels, the players featured in 1966 returned again with the same numbers in ’67, but Frank Robinson goes from a portrait shot to a batting post and Dean Chance’s team is changed from California to Minnesota.
1966 complete panels seem to be a little easier to find than the 1967 panels, according to PSA’s Population Report, which shows only 90 full panels from 1967 but 162 from ’66.
Ordinary, ungraded single Bazooka commons sell for only a few dollars but prices can stretch into the hundreds for high-grade Hall of Famers. A PSA 8 quality Mantle usually sells for $500-700 while an ungraded Mantle complete panel sold not long ago for $182. A PSA 9 Pete Rose sold for $433.
Two sets of unused complete 1966 boxes with cards on back have sold recently, with prices settling at $2,868 and $3,585.
