In 1911, Mecca Cigarettes offered one of the most unusual baseball card sets ever created, each one a little work of art almost toy-like in design. The T201 Mecca Double Folders set includes 100 different players in a dual-image folding design, meaning there are 50 cards in all to collect. The unique design means the players on each rectangular ‘card’ share the bottom half of one body.
A lower to mid-grade Double Folders set is our Vintage Set Break of the Month from Burls Sports, which is offering 50 spots at $49.99 each, giving collectors the chance to land a card of Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson or several other Hall of Famers and stars sprinkled throughout the set. Twenty-nine of the 50 cards have been graded and authenticated by either SGC or PSA.
The borderless T201s were distributed in packs of Mecca cigarettes and included statistics for both players on the card, a relatively new concept at the time.
A vintage set break works much like the case and box breaks now popular for new card products in that a collector purchases a ‘slot’ in the break. Names are shuffled by an online random number generator and cards are assigned according to the random draw. Each person participating in the break will receive a card. The entire process is done live online with the video recorded and posted later for those unable to watch the original broadcast.
