One of the planet’s rarest baseball cards will join a red hot basketball card and hundreds of other pieces of historic and one-of-a-kind memorabilia in SCP Auctions’ 2020 Fall Premium catalog, set to open Wednesday.
The T206 Eddie Plank, graded VG 3 by SGC, could sell for $100,000 or more and it’ll have some company at the top of the list of realized prices when the auction wraps up next month.
The sale will also include a 79-year-old original Heisman Trophy and an armoire full of championship jewelry.
Trophies and Rings
Bruce Smith was on his way to New York City on the morning of December 7, 1941 when he learned of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. In the hours leading up to his appearance at the New York Athletic Club, Smith re-wrote his acceptance speech to reflect the nation’s resolve. The Minnesota captain and star halfback’s inspiring address would be broadcast across the country.
Smith’s Heisman, originally cast by Dieges and Clust, stands 18” tall and weighs 25 pounds and remains in excellent condition.
Thirty-three years separate two Dodgers World Series championship rings featured in the auction. Gil Hodges’ 1955 ring commemorates the sole championship of the franchise’s time in Brooklyn. “Dem Bums” finally tasted victory over their cross-town rivals from The Bronx in a decisive game 7 in which Hodges drove in both of the Dodgers’ runs. It’s expected to sell for $80,000 or more.
Mike Marshall’s 1988 players ring represents one of the most memorable World Series in baseball history. It carries an estimate of $25,000 or more.
Also up for grabs are Rod Woodson’s 2000 Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl XXXV ring ($60,000+); Rollie Fingers’ 1973 Oakland A’s World Series ring ($70,000), Jesse Haines’ 1926 St. Louis Cardinals World Series ring ($30,000+); Bill Sharman’s 1988 Lakers NBA Championship ring ($25,000+) and another NBA title ring earned by Clyde Lovellette as a member of the 1963 Boston Celtics, which headlines a group of items consigned by the late Hall of Famer’s family.
