An 81-year-old Heisman Trophy, Ted Williams’ 1947 Triple Crown award and Steve Christoff’s gold medal from the 1980 “Miracle On Ice” U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team will be among an exclusive group of items being offered in a premium catalog being put together by SCP Auctions.
The company says no more than 100 items will be offered in the “February Finest” sale.
Smith’s Heisman was last offered in 2020 by SCP and is one of the most historically important of all of the Heisman awards. He was informed he had won just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor and the University of Minnesota star rewrote his acceptance speech on the train to New York to reflect the times. The trophy stands 18 inches tall and weighs 25 pounds.
Williams “triple crown” is literally that. A red velvet crown signifying his leading the American League in batting average (.343), homers (32) and RBI (114). It was his second, putting him on a plateau with Rogers Hornsby as the only players to accomplish the feat twice.
SCP was the last to offer the trophy at auction. It sold in December 2018 for over $125,000 after Williams’ family consigned it.
The upcoming auction will include some high end lots of sports cards, including an SGC 9 copy of the 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 (none higher) and a fully PSA graded T206 set with a 4.27 GPA.
John McGraw’s 1913-14 World Tour uniform graded MEARS A9.5 will headline the game-used portion of the catalog alongside Jim “Catfish” Hunter’s photomatched Yankees home jersey from August 12, 1977, and the uniform Alex Rodriguez wore when he hit his 600th career home run on August 4th, 2010.
All-Star Game bats from Yogi Berra (1960-PSA/DNA GU 10)) and Mickey Mantle (1964-GU9) and the club Rodriguez used to smack his 493rd career home run to tie Lou Gehrig on the all-time list are part of a run of game-used lumber in the auction.
Single-signed baseballs from Cy Young, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, and Connie Mack are also among the headliners.
Available championship jewelry is topped by a 2006 Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl XLI player’s ring, Lenny Wilkens’ 1998 Basketball Hall of Fame coach’s ring, a 2016 Atlanta Falcons NFC Championship player’s ring, and a 2020 Tampa Bay Rays AL Championship staff ring.
Steve Christoff’s 1980 Olympic Hockey gold medal is also part of the auction. It last sold in 2020 for $320,000.
SCP is still looking for similar valuable card or memorabilia lots to include in the catalog, which is set to run Jan. 25- Feb. 4.
