Last week, a friend of mine sent me a clip of a new Netflix movie called The Christmas Chronicles. The short scene featuring Kurt Russell, was about a baseball card– and quite funny.
I’d kind of forgotten about it but in that week’s time the movie has become a huge hit with over 20 million streams on Netflix. I won’t go too deep into the plot but essentially Santa’s sleigh crashes and he’s forced to seek alternative transportation.
In the clip, Santa (Kurt Russell) comes up to a table at a restaurant and tries to trade his 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle.
Any time Hollywood does something with baseball cards it’s great to see (and yes, we know the “1952 Mantle” is a movie prop, not the real deal).
It turns out not to have been just a random thing, however.
The movie’s producer, Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter), is an avid collector who bought a real ’52 Mantle for himself about 20 years ago. He no longer has it and that was sort of the inspiration for the scene in the movie.
David Seideman of Forbes.com caught up with Columbus and wrote about the whole thing.
