Babe Ruth memorabilia led the way in Goldin Auctions’ October Legends event, which closed early Saturday morning with nearly $3 million in sales from almost 11,000 bids.
Ruth’s last contract with the New York Yankees, signed in 1934, sold for $278,300 while a 1929-30 game-used pro model bat graded PSA/DNA GU-10 brought $181,050. Items consigned by Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt were also responsible for a big chunk of the realized prices in the auction. Schmidt’s 1984 Gold Glove Award ($44,770), the bat he used to hit his 400th home run ($33,880), and his 1976 “Sultan of Swat” award crown ($55,600) were the hottest items.
Vintage card collectors chased a complete 1916 M101-4 Sporting News set of 200 cards, which sold for $121,000 while a collection of early 20th century items from the career of ‘Honest’ Eddie Murphy was paced by a 1913 World Series glass presentation bat from his days with the Philadelphia Athletics. The unique commemorative item, presented on the field during Game 2 of the Series 101 years ago sold for $114,950.
“We are thrilled with the results of the auction which shows the sports memorabilia market is vibrant and growing in popularity,” said Ken Goldin Founder of Goldin Auctions. “The auction had strong results all across the board, especially the Babe Ruth, Mike Schmidt, Derek Jeter and ‘Honest Eddie’ Murphy collections. The fact that 97% of the lots sold, is especially gratifying for both our consigners and bidders.”
