A Bill Russell jersey photo matched to Game 7 of the 1966 NBA Finals and signed by the Boston Celtics great sold for $966,000 late Saturday night at Goldin Auctions. It was the third Russell jersey sold at auction December of last year. The first two came from his personal collection and the one sold by Goldin contained a 2009 letter of authenticity from Russell. The three jerseys combined to sell for over $3.1 million.
Another jersey from an NBA icon was also among the top sellers in Goldin’s Elite auction. One donned by Julius Erving during his rookie season with the ABA’s Virginia Squires and later signed by the high flying Hall of Famer netted $522,000, a record price for any Erving or ABA item ever sold.
A Kobe Bryant jersey matched to Games 1 and 2 of the 2008 NBA Finals was also offered in the auction. It sold for $282,000.
The majority of the lots offered were high-end trading cards. A 2018-19 Panini National Treasures Gold Luka Doncic rookie patch autograph #7/10 was the top seller, bringing a record price of $666,000.
A 2003-04 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor LeBron James (#42/50) graded BGS 9.5 went for $540,000 while the 1/1 Panini Absolute Memorabilia Signature Materials Steph Curry Logoman netted $492,000. A 2003 Net Pro Authentic Apparel Serena Williams autographed patch card (#71/100) sold for $266,400, setting a record price for a trading card featuring a female athlete.

The top selling item in the auction was a comic book–a 1939 DC Comics #27 featuring the first appearance of Batman. Graded 6.5 by CGC, it went for $1.74 million.
