A run of Mickey Mantle cards and other vintage classics are among the lots in Robert Edward Auctions’ September Encore event.
The online catalog includes cards from the19th century through the present day, including dozens of Mantle cards, from a fresh-to-the-hobby example of his 1952 Topps issue graded SGC 2.5, to a 1951 Bowman rookie, an autographed 1952 Bowman with a PSA 10 signature grade and high quality examples from the 1950s and 60s.
“This is one of our largest auctions of the year with nearly 3,700 items that span more than 130 years of history across multiple sports and collectible categories,” remarked REA President Brian Dwyer.
The event will run through Sunday, September 24 with initial bidding closing at 9:00 PM ET. As with all of REA’s monthly Encore Auctions, every item has a starting bid of $10.
Another top highlight is the 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams (SGC 5) that was originally part of hobby pioneer Lionel Carter’s massive collection.
REA has gathered a large group of pre-War consignments for the sale including 1915 Cracker Jack cards of Rube Marquard (a Mint 9, the highest graded copy ever handled by SGC), a 1915 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson SGC 5, a 1913 Tom Barker Game Joe Jackson that’s one of three rated 9 by SGC, a 1910 E93 Standard Caramel Cy Young (among 30 examples from the set being offered by REA) and a 1933 Goudey #92 Lou Gehrig rated PSA 4.
The event features four 1911 T205 Gold Border cards graded PSA NM 7, the highest grade ever given to each – George Moriarty, Edgar Lennox (Sovereign Back), Thomas Leach (Cycle Back), and the Russ Ford Black Cap (Lots 40-43).
One of a small number of higher grade 1968 Topps Venezuelan Willie Mays cards—this one a PSA 7 is among the post-War listings along with a PSA 9 1954 Bowman Yogi Berra (only one 10 exists), PSA 10 copies of both the 1982 Topps and Topps Traded Cal Ripken Jr. first year cards and a 2018 Bowman’s Best Shohei Ohtani Red Refractor graded PSA 10.
There are 11 lots with cards from the 1948-49 Leaf set, including #1 Joe DiMaggio (SGC EX 5), #3 Babe Ruth SGC VG 3, #76 Ted Williams SGC VG/EX 4, and #11 Phil Rizzuto Rookie SGC VG/EX 50 as well as a run of 1955 Topps including Koufax and Clemente rookies.
Football listings are led by a 1962 Topps Mike Ditka rookie card graded PSA 8 while the basketball section includes a PSA 8 1980-81 Topps Larry Bird/Magic Johnson rookie and two examples of the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan, both rated 8. Hockey collectors will chase a PSA 10 copy of Alex Ovechkin’s 2005-06 Upper Deck rookie.
A ticket stub from Game 1 of the 1954 World Series when Willie Mays made his famous running catch is among the top items in the memorabilia section of the auction along with a 1930 Ty Cobb signed check, Phil Rizzuto’s 1973 Yankees Old Timers Day jersey with an LOA from his wife and a copy of the first issue of Sports Illustrated from August 1954.
