NHL goalie masks haven’t always been painted so elaborately. The man who started the craze over 30 years ago is a hockey collector himself.
New York Islanders goalie Glenn ‘Chico’ Resch thought he needed a mask with a little personality. Most goalie masks were standard issue so the girlfriend of a clubhouse employee painted one for him.
That mid-1970s model wound up in the Hockey Hall of Fame not long after he began wearing it, so Resch commissioned another. It eventually worked its way onto eBay just a couple of years ago when Resch the collector swooped in.
Being a part of history –however unexpected–still brings a smile to the face of the man behind the mask.
