In an era where inserts were fast becoming some of the most important cards a trading card manufacturer created, Fleer paid homage to some of the top long distance marksmen. The 1994-95 Fleer Sharp Shooter set featured some high voltage scorers.
The vast majority of the cards in the set show players getting ready to release their patented long-range shots. The backdrop of the card is a bright twine net with a multicolored basketball underneath. That deep, colorful ball shows rich, team specific colors and the thick black ribbing of the ball. The player’s name is scrolled up the left-hand side of the card from bottom to top in a shiny foil, and the Fleer 94-95 text is also found in foil at the top of the card.
A special Sharp Shooter logo features a sketched ball shooting from one corner to the other along with the words found in one of the corners of the card.
The card backs feature the same backdrop as the front with another action shot of the player and a text box that illustrates what makes each player so deadly from outside.
The first player featured had a very solid career, especially shooting the ball, but now may be better known as Steph’s dad one Dell Curry. Dell drained 154 threes that season, 14th best in the league. He shot the rock from behind the three point line at an impressive .427 clip, which ranked ninth in the league.
Detroit Pistons Hall of Famer Joe Dumars is the next sharp shooter. Joe D. is coming off a 1993-94 season where he averaged over 20 points per game and shot over 45% from the field.
Next up is a really cool image of Dale Ellis, shown in full concentration mode for the release is his jumper. The first player in NBA history to surpass 1,000 career made 3-pointers, Ellis was also the 1989 NBA 3-Point Contest champion. Years ago in an interview, he proclaimed himself as the best shooter in NBA history. He was very good, sometimes even great, but we definitely wouldn’t go that far.
Phoenix Suns beefed up shooting guard Dan Majerle is featured next. ‘Thunder Dan’ entered the record books the year prior by knocking down a nasty 192 three balls, surpassing Vernon Maxwell’s single season record.
A man who retired is the NBA’s all time 3-point king, Indiana Pacers Hall of Famer Reggie Miller, is as much of a sure thing in this set as anybody in the game. He knocked down a 195 threes in 1994-95, fifth best in the league. He retired with over 2,500 made threes, then an NBA record.
If the term sharp shooter was in the dictionary, Cleveland Cavaliers Mark Price’s picture may be shown next to it. Price, a two-time 3-Point Contest champion, was also one of the greatest and most prolific free throw shooters ever, converting an amazing 90.4% from the charity stripe over the course of his career.
The upright textbook release of Glen Rice is found on the seventh card in the set. The then Miami Heat sharpshooterretired after scoring over 18,000 points and averaging over 18 points per game during his great career.
One of the most prolific scores of the era, Mitch Richmond is featured next. Richmond averaged at least 21 points per game in each of his first six NBA seasons, a stretch that was rarely matched in the league. He is also found getting ready to release a jumper that is sure to find the bottom of the net.
A man known as 3-D for his ability to knock down the trey, Orlando Magic shooting forward Dennis Scott is found here. The year after this set was released Scott broke the NBA single season 3-point field goal record by knocking down 267 threes, a record which stood for a decade. He also set the single game mark knocking down 113 threes in a game in 1996. As good as he was on the court, he might be best remembered for his time on the mic rapping like fellow Orlando teammate Shaquille O’Neal.
Golden State Warriors scoring guard Latrell Sprewell rounds out the 10 card set. A consistent 18 to 20 point per game player during his prime, Spree and his 141 threes set a Warriors team record the year prior to this insert set being produced.
Although only nominal value (with cards readily available on eBay), this is a great set that captures the essence of some of the league’s best shooters with a really cool background, logo and great action shots capturing the players doing what they do best… shooting the rock.
