Baltimore Ravens’ owner Steve Bisciotti has confirmed he was the big spender in Hunt Auctions’ recent sale of Johnny Unitas memorabilia. He says he bought Unitas’ helmet and first pro contract to keep them from going into a private collection.
The number of folks who can plunk down $165,000 for ten pieces of football memorabilia is rather limited. An NFL owner would be in that group and the man who grew up watching Johnny U as a Baltimore Colt and now owns the city’s current pro team, was happy to write the check.
The Unitas helmet and contract that were part of an auction in late February were purchased by a bidder described originally as "anonymous". No more. Now, the man who bought them says he’s going to make sure they’re in some sort of public display. And it seems some Unitas family members haven’t all been on the same page with regard to their father’s memorabilia.
