A rare 111-year-old Honus Wagner card produced and distributed only in the area where he became famous is making its hobby auction debut.
Clean Sweep Auctions is offering the 1913 Voskamp’s Coffee Wagner in its newly launched September auction. Issued in the Pittsburgh area in packages of coffee and tea, cards from the set are very rare today. The one offered by Clean Sweep was graded and encapsulated at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago and was just the third copy ever graded by PSA. SGC has graded only four.
There has not been a public sale of a Voskamp’s Wagner since 2017.
Two other key lots in the auction include 1887 N172 Old Judge cards of Hall of Famers Mike “King” Kelly and Harry Wright, an E102 Ty Cobb PSA 2 (mk), a T206 Cobb (green background) PSA 1.5, Cobb (bat on shoulder) PSA 4 and a Cy Young Portrait PSA 5.
Other pre-War offerings include a P2 Sweet Caporal pins lot, an E103 Williams Caramel Ty Cobb, an E101 Honus Wagner (PSA 3) and a T3 Turkey Red Ty Cobb PSA 1. The auction Ruths from the 1933 Goudey set in collector grade, and a 1941 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio SGC 5.
Other notable lots include a 1947-66 Exhibit set minus just four cards, a rare 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams PSA 1 and a higher grade 1955 Topps baseball complete set with a BVG 7 Roberto Clemente rookie card.
Clean Sweep is also offering a nearly complete autographed 1952 Bowman Baseball set. The Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays are being offered as single items, with the balance as one lot. The set is missing only three cards.
A PSA 6 1984-85 Star Michael Jordan and a PSA 8 1986-87 Fleer Jordan lead off the basketball cards in the sale. Football collectors will see some clean sets, and a run of high-grade Bart Starr cards from his 1957 rookie card through his final 1971 Topps card.
Among the memorabilia in the online catalog is a Walter Johnson single-signed baseball, a 1933 Yankees team-signed ball with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and seven others who were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and a signed Roger Maris rookie card.
There are 1914 Joe Tinker and 1920 Brooklyn Dodgers pennants along with tickets and programs going back to 1905.
Boxing cards and memorabilia, a selection of historic presidential signed items and entertainment autographs round out the sale.
“This auction has the most diverse offering of material, perhaps in our history,” remarked Clean Sweep’s Steve Verkman.
The auction runs through Oct. 9 at CleanSweepAuctions.com.
