A rare oversized color photo of the 1956 World Series champion New York Yankees and once owned by their manager, Casey Stengel, is among the top items in the latest online catalog from RMY Auctions.
The 8×10” Kodachrome remains in virtually perfect condition. Laid behind the original matte folder, the entire piece measures about 10 x 12” and was originally part of the Stengel estate. The popular manager died in 1975. He won ten pennants and seven World Series as Yankees manager from 1949-1960.
In an era when black and white still dominated and color was very expensive to produce in quantity, the photo would have represented a special gift to players and other key personnel associated with the team. Triple Crown winner Mickey Mantle and 1956 World Series perfect game pitcher Don Larsen are visible on the top row. Yogi Berra, Billy Martin and Whitey Ford are seated on the bottom row along with Stengel.
Taken at Yankee Stadium, the photo shows the team that defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers in seven games. It’s one of 445 photographs in RMY’s newest auction, which runs through February 28 at RMYAuctions.com.
The auction also includes a rare 1922 photo of Babe Ruth and several wire service photos of Lou Gehrig during his playing days.
