The Metropolis Collection, a large group of vintage 1950’s-1960’s Kodachrome Transparencies including some of baseball’s most famous names, are giving fans and collectors a look back into the post-War ‘golden era’ of baseball.
Among the dozens images being sold at auction this week are those featuring Mickey Mantle, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks and other stars, notables and Hall of Famers. Some are posed shots, while others showcase on field action.
The transparencies are being sold by Henry Yee Auctions, which calls them “easily one of the finest private offering of vintage sports photographic material that we have handled.”
The color transparencies are rare in that they are in color, despite originating in an eara when black and white was still the prevalent medium in commercial photography.
Typically, only photographers who were shooting for color publications such as Sports Illustrated or SPORT Magazine utilized the tools to create high quality color sports photographs.1950s Kodachrome sports slides are considered rare.
Each transparency is original, made at the time the image was taken by the photograopher. Buyers will be able to produce unlimited enlargements from the transparencies.
Over 700 transparencies are included in the eBay listings, which can be found here and begin closing Wednesday.
