Pujols Market Begins to Sizzle After 500th Homer

Prices didn’t shoot through the roof, but it looks like the baseball world is rediscovering Albert Pujols rookie cards.  After he became the 26^th player to join the 500 home run club on Tuesday night, bidding and buying activity picked up with four Pujols cards entering the list of the top 30 ‘most watched’ baseball cards on eBay.

The premier Pujols rookie card is the 2001 Bowman Chrome autograph, numbered to 500.  A BGS 9 graded example pushed past $2600 with more than three days left in the bidding.

The hottest Albert Pujols cards are typically those bearing a signature, either from his rookie season or a memorabilia card from a high end product distributed in more recent years.

Immediately after Pujols hit number 500, several of his higher end certified autograph rookie cards sold via Buy it Now or Best Offer, including a 2001 Donruss Season Statline ($525), a 2001 Donruss Class of 2001 numbered to 100, a 2001 Fleer Showcase numbered to 75 and a 2001 SPx auto numbered to 1500.  A PSA 10 rated Statline card was also up for auction as bids topped $500 with four days left.

On Tuesday morning, I chatted with ESPN’s Mint Condition about the market for Pujols rookie cards and memorabilia, which may be heading back upward considering the start the Angels’ slugger has had this season.
