There was no holiday from baseball in St. Louis, where the team’s annual Winter Warm-Up wrapped up.
Steroids? What steroids? Mark McGwire returned to a hero’s welcome in St. Louis. Then again, it was a perfect audience–Cardinal fans willing to shell out a few hundred bucks for autographs and game-used memorabilia in a pep rally type atmosphere.
The team’s annual Winter Warm-Up always draws a huge crowd and this year was no different. Thousands turned out for the event, but only a few hundred got a chance to get something signed by Albert Pujols.
The signing session for the reigning National League MVP was a complete sell-out at $175 a pop. They could have sold more Pujols autograph tickets but instead held a random drawing to determine who got one and who didn’t.
Cards’ manager Tony LaRussa was $30. Newly-signed Matt Holliday was $100. Others ranged from $10-75 each. Some fans travelled several hours to get in line.
