He hasn’t made a lot of appearances at auction over the last couple of years, but Honus is coming back to the block as the marquee headliner in an upcoming auction.
In its August auction, Mile High Card Company will be offering a T206 Honus Wagner, an issue universally considered the crown jewel of all baseball cards. A final selling price is anyone’s guess but Wagner cards usually don’t disappoint. Through the years, most Wagners have appreciated in value, even if held for only a few years.
While there have been only a few Wagner cards sold lately, it’s the second time in less than a year Mile High will have one in its catalog.
“It was such a privilege to present a T206 Wagner as the headliner of ‘The Event’ auction last October,” said MHCC CEO and President Brian Drent, “The world-record result achieved for the sale of that card was an important factor in securing this Wagner for the August Auction.”
In fact, the sale of that PSA 2 Wagner last fall brought in over $1.3 million, nearly doubling the previous public sale high price attaIned four years ago. With the sports card market on an unprecedented bull run over the past six months, it’s certainly possible the PSA 1 may also push into seven-figure territory.
The card shows plenty of mileage as you might expect, but without the unsightly areas of missing paper on the front surface that afflict most specimens of the same or similar grade level.
The highest price ever paid for a T206 Wagner was $3.12 million for the “Jumbo” PSA 5 (MC) which last sold in 2016.
