There won’t be a summertime National Sports Collectors Convention for the first time in more than 40 years but one hobby entity is hoping to host a “virtual National.”
Geoff Wilson, owner of Sports Card Investor, says his company is planning a free, five-day streaming event allowing dealers, breakers and others to showcase their inventory to collectors who can purchase from them.
The National’s Board of Directors has postponed this year’s National from July 29-August 2 because of COVID-19. Instead, they’re hoping to hold the show at the Atlantic City Convention Center in mid-December.
“The Virtual” is scheduled to go live during that original five-day run. Wilson plans to have his team stream the online show on YouTube and Instagram.
The National launched in 1980 and has grown significantly over the years, with thousands of collectors and hundreds of dealers, auction companies and service providers in attendance each year.
“Many collectors and dealers plan year-round for this event, which can make or break a dealer’s year, financially,” Wilson stated. “While we certainly respect the NSCC’s decision to postpone, we also empathize with everyone attending this coveted event and want to give something back to the sports card community.”
