The previous year had ended in a championship and put a young Michael Jordan on the map. The 1982-83 season wouldn’t end with net cutting and trophies for the University of North Carolina Tarheels, but they would make it back to the Sweet 16. Now, local newspaper’s photo of Jordan from that final win of that season is up for grabs.
The RMY Auctions Photo of the Day was taken March 25, 1983 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY where UNC rallied in the second half to oust Ohio State from the tournament. Pulled from a newspaper archive and submitted to PSA where it was given a Type 1 designation, the oversized black and white photo measures nearly 11 inches across and 7 ¾” high.
Bidding has already passed $2,200 with the auction set to continue through Saturday.
The back of the photo bears a couple of file date stamps, including one from the day it was taken, along with a newspaper clipping of the photo from the day it appeared in the Syracuse Post-Standard.
A sophomore at the time, Jordan scored 17 points—seven at the free throw line– and grabbed seven rebounds in Carolina’s win over the Buckeyes. Two days later, Dean Smith’s team would be eliminated from the tournament by Georgia, which advanced to the Final Four before losing to eventual national champion North Carolina State in the semi-finals.
