A lot can happen in 22 years.
Outside of his family, local fans and college recruiters, not many people would have recognized the name ‘Peyton Manning’ prior to the start of the 1993 football season. He was a New Orleans area high school player, just going through pre-season drills when a local newspaper photographer stopped by on assignment.
The 8×10 photo’s reverse indicates photographer Brian Berteaux was sent to Newman High School to grab some shots of players and coaches for use in stories about the upcoming season. Little did he know the teenager would become a household name in a few years, setting a pile of NFL passing records.
1993 established Manning as the premier quarterback in high school football. He was named National Player of the Year by Gatorade and the Columbus Touchdown Club. When his high school career was over, Manning had led Newman to a 34-5 record in three years as a starter. He then entered college at Tennessee.

The Manning high school news photo is one of 450 vintage images in the RMY June Auction, which closes Saturday night.
