One collector’s passion for Pete Rose cards led to the assembly of the second best master set on PSA’s Set Registry. It’s now up for auction but that doesn’t mean the consignor is out of Rose cards.
He also owns the number one ranked set.
SCP Auctions will sell nearly 150 cards from the “Charlie Hustle Master Collection” in its upcoming Fall Premier. Collectors will also be able to bid on the entire group.
The collection includes PSA Gem Mint 10s of Rose’s 1969 Topps, 1970 Topps, 1972 Topps, 1973 Topps, 1975 Topps, 1977 Topps, 1978 Topps, and 1979 Topps.
According to the auction house, the consignor got started on his #1 Pete Rose master set because he is a lifelong Cincinnati Reds collector and Rose fan, even though he grew up watching the New York Yankees in his New Jersey childhood home. He started to assemble his Rose collection in the 1990s and his top rated set was on display at the Reds Hall of Fame for two years in the mid-2000s.
“I’m as obsessed with Pete Rose baseball cards as Pete was with hits,” he told us.
The #2 master set was born out of that obsession with the #1 set. He often had to buy complete collections to get the few cards needed to complete the #1 master set. In doing so, the #2 master set was born.
The 1964 Topps, 1966 Topps, and 1970 Topps All Star that will be part of the group offered at SCP Auctions are all graded PSA Mint 9, with no examples graded higher across the PSA population report. His 1963 Rose rookie card is rated 8.
Dozens of other extremely rare Rose examples will be offered in the auction, many of which are low population PSA 10s as well.
According to SCP, some of the cards in the collection haven’t surfaced in more than ten years.
The first phase of the collection, the Rose cards spanning 1963-1979, will be offered in SCP’s 2023 Fall Premier Auction that runs November 15 through December 2. The second phase running from 1980-87 will be presented in the company’s next auction.
