Panini America’s Obsidian basketball product returns for its second year when it hits the shelves May 20. This year’s issue has the advantage of a strong rookie class, so despite the high price for the brand, the rewards could be greater with a lineup that includes Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and RJ Barrett.
This year’s cards feature die-cuts and a full, textured look.
A hobby box of 2019-20 Panini Obsidian will contain a single pack of seven cards, which is two more than last year’s product, but at a higher price point. Panini is promising two autographs per hobby box and two parallels or inserts, on average. Each pack also will contain three base cards. The SRP on boxes is $165, but if it’s like any other basketball product this year, expect it to cost more.
Obisidian will debut three inserts in this year’s set: Atomic, Pitch Black and Tunnel Vision. All will utilize die-cut designs, and there were will Electric Etch parallels that feature the NBA’s top players. Some of the parallels will be 1/1 cards.
Autograph cards is what will drive Obsidian, though, and Panini says the checklist will include both current and retired stars.
The Rookie Jersey Autographs will have parallels in Purple, Orange, Green, Yellow, Red and a 1/1 White Mojo version.
Autograph sets making their debut include Volcanic Signatures, Lightning Strike Signatures and Onyx Autographs. Each of these will include Electric Etch parallels and will include both current and former players.
