Its baseball product was a big hit—even without an MLB license. Now, 2012 Panini National Treasures Football is ready to take the stage. Panini has been banking heavily on the high end product, showing off hundreds of images over the last few months and Wednesday is launch day.
It’ll be one of the last times either of the NFL’s two trading card partners can still count a product under the 2012 label and that’ s a big deal considering the selling power of last season’s rookie crop. You’ll get plenty of hits if you can fork over the $500 or so that each box requires. Whether they’re good enough to justify the cost won’t be known until we see more secondary market sales.
On Card Autographs From Rookies, Hall of Famers
This will be the seventh year for National Treasures football and in addition to milking the autographs of Andrew Luck and company for one more go-round, Panini is touting more on card autographs than ever before—a huge selling point for collectors who have generally decided they’re not crazy about stickers on any product—let alone one of the premier lines. Not all of the autos will be on card, however.
Panini has also corralled a pretty impressive group of Hall of Famers, who have signed cards for inclusion into the product including a veritable who’s who of 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s stars including Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Barry Sanders, John Elway, Dan Marino, Dick Butkus, Bart Starr and numerous others.
The product will be sold in a wooden box that guarantees three autographs, three memorabilia cards and two additional base cards or parallels per box.
Jumbo Book Cards Among Hits
National Treasures will debut Rookie Jumbo Prime Booklet Signatures, fold-out cards with large swatches of uniforms and other materials combined with an autograph. There’s also a fresh design for the set’s popular Rookie Signature Materials. Panini says all will be signed on card.
There are 100 current stars in the base set, all numbered to 99 as well as a group of 100 Legends numbered to 99, 100 Rookie Signatures numbered to 99 or less and 35 Rookie Signature Materials numbered to 99.
2012 Panini National Treasures football is hand collated, designed to ensure that boxes contain a balance of quality cards. Major pulls will be in the secondary market quickly as collectors try to either recoup their money or make a little. You can see what’s already up on eBay here.
