Henry Yee Auctions is offering them as individual lots closing over several days.
The Metropolis Collection dates to an era when black and white photos were used in most publications. Only higher-end magazines utilized color because of the cost. Surviving original photographic works from the 1960s on back are fairly rare and Kodachrome slides are seldom offered.
While baseball is the primary focus of the collection, the auction includes multiple color images of Hall of Famers from several different sports as well as special events such as the 1957 World Series at Yankee Stadium and the September 1963 day when the Chicago Cubs paid tribute to retiring St. Louis Cardinal great Stan Musial.
Posed and action images from the 1950s and 60s include Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Brooks and Frank Robinson, Roger Maris, Oscar Robertson, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath and others. Several posed images of 1950s members of the Yankees are also among the listings.
There are also black and white negatives showcasing Jackie Robinson, Clemente, Jim Brown and other greats as well as contact sheets with multiple negatives from Cincinnati’s Crosley Field that feature Pete Rose, a young Johnny Bench and members of the Pittsburgh Pirates such as Clemente and Willie Stargell.
Bidding for each listing starts at 99 cents.
