The National Sports Collectors Convention floor is always buzzing but in a quiet corner near PSA’s booth on Thursday afternoon we spied one collector surrounded by opened packs of….
what?
Was that really a 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey box? The one with Wayne Gretzky’s most valuable rookie card potentially inside? The ones that usually sell for around $50,000 on the rare occasion when they’re offered for sale?
Yup.
With no fanfare, the entire box–potentially holding one of hockey’s most valuable cards– was being opened.
He was getting some assistance from someone who broke the wax seal on each pack and then left the contents for him to thumb through in search of the hockey holy grail.
44 packs in….still no Gretzky.
Watch the rest unfold below.
Prices for Gretzky rookie cards in higher grades range from $1,500 (7) to $45,000 (9). A PSA 10 sold during the 2016 National for $465,000.
