Collector Beau Thompson of Madison, WI is well-known in the sports card world for one ambitious goal: to collect one million different Chicago Cubs cards.
It’s a project that’s been years in the making and involved everything from T206s to the latest Topps releases We caught up to him in 2019 when the avid fan was just over one-quarter of the way to his goal.
At card shows, you could often find him walking around with a homemade sandwich board listing the total of Cubs he’d collected to that point.
His efforts eventually caught the eye of Topps and the Cubs. Over the weekend, he met his goal–and it wasn’t just a quiet moment in his basement.
Thompson wound up on the diamond at Wrigley Field, with his name on the marquee and a baseball in his hands.
He was given his own jersey with the number “1M” on the back. Then, he walked into the ballpark and eventually down onto playing field to throw out the first pitch and meet some players he’d collected.
To top it off, he received a specially made card for his one millionth—a special Cubs card made by Topps…of himself.

The quest for Cubs isn’t over, but there is a limit…
Now that I have 1 million Cubs cards…
Will I stop collecting Cubs cards? No!
Will I collect TWO million? NO!!!
Will I continue adding to my collection? YES!
