Today, it would have likely been marked with a hologram or requested by the Baseball Hall of Fame. Forty years ago, though, not many people thought about the bat Bucky Dent used to beat the Red Sox in that famous playoff game at Fenway Park. Game-used memorabilia was collected but in most cases, it wasn’t a priority.
The Yankees claim to have the bat on display, courtesy of a private collector who bought it at auction years ago.
The original recipient’s family says he was in the Yankee locker room that day and asked for the bat, which Dent had actually borrowed from teammate Mickey Rivers during his at bat. The bat boy isn’t sure–and Rivers can’t recall.
It’s an interesting story told this week by Newsday.
