Notes: Taking the Card Shop Plunge; Dow Jones vs. Card Market; Kirk Gibson Fundraiser

A lot of people dream about opening a card shop.  Lifelong collector Aaron Bertram of Traverse City, MI decided to stop thinking about it and start doing it.

On Friday, the former sales manager at a local auto dealership is opening the doors to The Vault Sports Cards and Collectibles.  It’ll be mostly sports cards, but he’ll also try to appeal to gamers and is using the shop as a base for his online business as well.

“With the way we market, we’re not just a Traverse City business; we’re an Earth business,” Bertram told the Record-Eagle. “We literally can ship anywhere and do ship anywhere. We have customers and friends all over the globe. It’s not like we’re limited to the people that walk in that door, which is key.”

What kind of impact does it have on the market for trading cards when the stock market is volatile?

David Seideman of Forbes.com spoke with some dealers about that topic—and the current market for vintage cards.

The Dodgers and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) will partner with the Kirk Gibson Foundation during the opening week of the 2018 season to raise money and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease.  Part of the fundraising effort will include an auction of game-worn jerseys and autographed Gibson bobbleheads.

Gibson will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Days as the Dodgers recognize the 30th anniversary of the 1988 championship team.

The celebration of the 30th anniversary of Gibson’s dramatic walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series will continue during the second game of the season, when the Dodgers will give away a Special Edition Gibson bobblehead to the first 40,000 ticketed fans in attendance.

LADF will also hold an online auction from April 9-30 for 88 limited-edition, Gibson-autographed bobbleheads and the Dodgers’ game-worn jerseys from the Friday, March 30 game with proceeds benefitting the Kirk Gibson Foundation. Gibson was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2015.
