Some collectors, retailers and breakers are wondering why 2023 Topps Update Baseball boxes got smaller after they submitted pre-orders for the annual release.
Topps’ initial solicitations initially indicated Hobby boxes would contain 24 packs with 14 cards just as they did last year and in Series 1 and 2 this year.
However, as we wrote last month, Update boxes actually have only 20 packs and 12 cards. That means boxes contain 96 fewer cards and the effort to build the 330-card complete set became a lot tougher.
The one autograph or relic card per box promise hasn’t changed.
“While this represents a change from what was previously announced, there is no change in the numbered inserts and parallels, which means the odds of pulling one of these cards increases,” a Topps spokesman told us. “Also, the product guarantees remain the same – one autograph or relic card per hobby box.”

Former big-time dealer and Pacific Trading Cards Founder Mike Cramer’s book arrives this week.
Cramer was a mover and shaker in the hobby for a long time but never lost his love of collecting. He founded Pacific at age 30 with money he made crab fishing in the Bering Sea.
Jeff Morris has written about the book in our pages and Cramer recently spoke with a newspaper in his home state of Washington about his life in the hobby, including taking in thousands of cases of unsold Topps product decades ago.
The book is available on Amazon in paperback and via Kindle.

Six NHL teams have partnered with MeiGray for their game-worn jerseys, pucks and other items for the 2023-24 season, which began Tuesday night.
Columbus, New Jersey, Nashville, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington will again return to the game-worn program.
MeiGray’s goal puck programs will continue as well with on-ice officials turning them over to the company for authentication. Goal Pucks will be auctioned throughout the season at meigrayauctions.com. Game pucks will be available via eBay.
Collectors will once again also have the option to pre-order a game-worn jersey, watch it being worn on the ice and then have it shipped to them.
More details about the NHL partner’s ’23-24 promotion can be found here.
