Sometimes the market taketh away, but sometimes it giveth. And when your timing is impeccable, sometimes it giveth real good.
The 2018 Topps Chrome Sapphire Shohei Ohtani SuperFractor that sold for a record $336,000 Tuesday night was consigned by avid collector/investor DJ Skee and partners Carter and Courtney Reum of the Mint10 fund.
They had bought it for just over $62,000 via Goldin in 2021.
The auction took place less than a week after Ohtani became the first player to hit 50 homers and steal 50 bases as he cruises toward the National League MVP.
The card was the first one sold in the Sotheby’s/Fanatics ‘Holy Grails’ auction in New York.

A Wyoming man is accused of stealing over $2,000 in football cards and other merchandise from a local Walmart store by skip-scanning items at a self-checkout.
Investigators say Andy Titus, 43, then ignored police who tried to question him.
According to the Cowboy State Daily, Titus was arrested Sept. 11 and charged with felony aggregate theft involving 15 incidents between May and early last month.
Skip scanning is a form of shoplifting. A customer uses a price scanner at the checkout to ring up a cheaper item in place of a more expensive one. In this case, police say Titus typically scanned packages of Post-It notes he placed under the sports card boxes.
According to an affidavit cited by the website, store surveillance video helped point investigators to Titus, who refused to discuss the matter with police.
The maximum penalty for the charges he’s facing include jail time, a fine or both.
