The 1974 Topps baseball set has its share of errors and corrections. The Washington NL “jump the gun” variations are the most famous, but there’s also the Jesus Alou “no position” variation. Now, another oddity has surfaced, although this one seems to run more along the line of ‘printing error.”
Collector Steve Schnaper sent us an image of an Oakland A’s team card he recently acquired that has a ’21’ mysteriously stamped on the front, just to the left of the team name.
Typical A’s team cards simply have blank white space in that location.
The card Schapner acquired does have a wax stain on the back, indicating it was pulled from a pack at some point.
Was it missed somewhere in the production process and a couple of sheets were cut and packaged before it was noticed and removed?
Schapner says he put the card under magnification, which showed the number was part of the card itself–not something stamped on at a later date.
We’ll chalk it up to a printing error for now. It’ll be interesting to see if there might be others out there. We’ll let you know if so.
A new sports card show is set for the Detroit area in June.
The promoters of the Chicago Sports Spectacular have announced the new event, which will take place June 7-9 at the Suburban Collection Showcase in Novi, MI, located off Interstate 96, about 20 miles northwest of the city.
They say they’re planning a 350-table event with at least 40 autograph guests. Lions legend Barry Sanders is already confirmed to appear on Saturday.
Suburban Collection Showplace bills itself as “the largest, privately-owned exposition, conference and banquet center in Michigan.” It hosts the Michigan State Fair each year.
Show hours at 3:30 PM – 8:30 PM Friday, 9:30-5 on Saturday and 9:30-4 on Sunday. Early entry/VIP passes are also being sold.

Mall shows seem to be making a bit of a comeback. More are popping up on event calendars each year. A big crowed turned out for Saturday’s one-day show at Eastgate Mall in Cincinnati. Shows are held there each month.
Over the weekend, the Kentucky Oaks Mall in Paducah held its first show in more than ten years. Others are planned April 5-6, May 31-June 1, July 19-20 and Sept. 20-21.
