People used to discover baseball cards in their basements and attics that were worth a nice chunk of change. Well, they still do sometimes, but now the ticket market has its first “holy grail” find.
We recently wrote about the 1980s Northwestern college student who couldn’t get anyone to go to the Bulls opening game back in 1984 so he took the unused ticket and stuck it away. That was Michael Jordan’s debut, of course.
Now, Yahoo Sports paints a little more of the picture of how Mike Cole found out he might have the most valuable ticket ever sold on the sports memorabilia market.
Card grading is still happening at a breakneck pace. Over 55,000 cards were added to the population reports of the major firms on Wednesday alone and that’s pretty much close to an average day.
SGC says it took in more cards Wednesday than in any other day in the company’s 24-year history of authentication and grading.
Bidding on one of the three highest graded 1916 M101-5 #151 Babe Ruth Blank Back rookie cards on SGC’s pop report has reached $420,000.
The EX+ (5.5) example is at Memory Lane, with bidding set to close Saturday night.
Topps kicked off the release of Series 1 Baseball with its first ever premiere party in Los Angeles Tuesday night.
Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg,comedian Jeff Dye, TV personalities Katie Thurston and John Hersey, celebrity jeweler Ben Baller, actress Sarah Tianna and others were part of the event. Sandberg opened the ceremonial first pack.

There’s a new Sport Card Expo coming to Western Canada this spring.
It’s happening April 15-17 2022 at Millennium Place in Edmonton and it’s being put on by the same folks who produce the Toronto Expos.
Yvan Cournoyer and Bernie Parent will be on the autograph guest list.
WWE has announced a multi-year agreement that will make Fiterman Sports Group the Official Autograph Partner of WWE in the United States and Canada. It’s WWE’s first partnership of its kind in the autograph space.
The agreement is effective immediately and will include autograph signing sessions featuring current and former stars. Fiterman Sports Group and WWE have previously collaborated on signing events highlighted by WWE Legend The Undertaker, Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch.
“Our industry is growing every day and with this one-of-a-kind partnership with WWE, Fiterman Sports is looking forward to creating new meet-and-greet experiences between the WWE Superstars and their fans across the country,” said Ryan Fiterman, Founder & CEO, Fiterman Sports Group.
