The college letter jacket worn by Pete Maravich sold for $116,924 and a 1957 Willie Mays bat gifted to a youngster years ago netted $209,455 through Grey Flannel Auctions over the weekend.
The Maravich sweater consigned directly by his family.
Maravich averaged 43.8 ppg as a sophomore and 44.2 as a junior at LSU. He scored 50 or more points 28 times over his 83-game college career.
Also in the auction were Pistol Pete’s 1978 NBA All-Star uniform which sold for $34,243, his 1968, 69 & 70 NCAA First Team All-American plaques and the jacket that he wore at the 1987 Naismith Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
The Mays bat originated with a man who’d received it as a child in 1957.
In the letter of provenance that accompanied the bat, he wrote, “I was lucky enough to be on the field with my mother pre-game during batting practice. Mays handed me his bat to hold while he penned his auto. I shouted to him about his bat and he replied with ‘keep it kid’!
The bat was authenticated GU 9.5 by PSA/DNA.
Gem Rate reports PSA is now on pace to grade about 10 million cards per year. Over 206,000 items were added to the population report last week.
The company announced late last week that it was opening up Regular service on an allocation basis at a cost of $100 per card. Lower cost services won’t be open until some time in 2022.
PSA officials say the rollout of Regular service won’t impact work on processing the large number of submissions from months ago that have yet to be graded.
“PSA remains committed to allocating over 80% of our grading resources to processing orders in the backlog,” they wrote in a blog post announcing the allocation plan. “The re-introduction of Regular will not slow the processing of the backlog of Value orders.”
