Chet Krause, the founder of Krause Publications, died Saturday at age 92. Krause was a pioneer in the field of collecting-oriented publications, building a multi-million dollar company that produced numerous titles and eventually books for a wide variety of collecting genres.
His Iola, Wisconsin-based company eventually purchased Sports Collectors Digest from Stommen Publications in the 1970s.
SCD (not affiliated with Sports Collectors Daily) grew as the sports collecting hobby blossomed in the 1980s. When Chet Krause retired in 1990, the company employed 300 people and had more than $50 million in revenues. An employee stock ownership plan was implemented but in 2002, F&W Publications in Cincinnati purchased Krause Publications.
