NIL licensing is putting some new college basketball cards on the market and players are getting a piece of the action.
The Player’s Trunk has partnered with multiple schools for sets of cards for the 2022-23 season. The first to hit the market are those featuring Syracuse and St. John’s.
Each set consists of 11 cards with packs guaranteed to include one autograph at a cost of $24.99 plus shipping. The players will receive a portion of the sales from every pack sold.
Each card is printed with a gloss UV coating on 16pt cardstock.
The possible Syracuse autographs will be from Joe Girard III, Justin Taylor, Benny Williams, Quadir Copeland or John Bol Ajak.
The Syracuse set will be missing one of the team’s big stars, however. Due to F-1 visa status considerations, center Jesse Edwards isn’t allowed to monetize his name, image and likeness so he couldn’t be included. Edwards is from The Netherlands. He’s averaging nearly 15 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
The St. John’s set also contains 11 cards of current players, although junior forward David Jones (12.3 points/6 rebounds) is also prevented from appearing in an NIL product and doesn’t have a card.
Autographs in the St. John’s set include Dylan Addae, Posh Alexander, Montez Mathis. Joel Soriano and AJ Storr.
The Player’s Trunk will release additional sets as the season continues. UConn, Houston, Gonzaga, and Xavier are targeted for January release. Michigan State and Purdue are also on the docket but release dates for those haven’t been set yet.
In the western U.S., Jackson’s Food Stores have been releasing college team sets over the past several weeks with the University of Washington, Oregon and Boise State all part of the NIL related issues.
Packs contain a set of card with autographs randomly inserted.
