The card companies coralled the fresh crop of NFL rookies, taking pictures and gathering autographs that will appear on this year’s football cards.
Over 30 top NFL rookies made the annual pilgrimage to the Los Angeles Coliseum for the Rookie Photo Shoot over the weekend.
Upper Deck, Topps and Panini photographed players in various poses and forced the players to make good on their contracts by signing thousands of autographs–600 each in some cases (yes, some will be stickers rather than ‘on card’ autographs).
Upper Deck had asked collectors for ideas on special inscriptions that would be limited in number. For quarterback Marc Sanchez, it was "El Matador". Signing, posing and having their jerseys cut into "event used" swatches was not a bad way to spend a weekend for the players, who are probably just glad to now be getting paid for something football related.
The L.A. Daily News has coverage of the shoot.
