Autographed helmets from 32 different NFL quarterbacks and several former greats went on the auction block Sunday afternoon to raise money for those impacted by childhood cancer. It’s a fundraising initiative for the Starr Children’s Fund in collaboration with the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation.
The new “Helmets for Heroes” fundraising campaign will honor the late Hall of Famer Bart Starr and is taking place during Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month this September.
The Starrs were avid backers of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation for 44 years.
Starr was known for sending hand-written letters to current players and it was in that spirit that the campaign was launched, according to Starr’s widow, Cherry.
“In honor of Bart’s annual ‘kick-off’ notes to quarterbacks, I wrote a letter to every starting quarterback in the league asking for their assistance in our Helmets for Heroes campaign,” said Bart’s widow, Cherry, in the release. “We had an overwhelming response, and are so pleased to announce that we have 100% participation. Bart and my hope was to see our country’s precious children and their families receive child specific medical treatments and care. We are immensely grateful for the league’s contribution, as well as everyone who considers bidding online for an autographed helmet.”
In addition to helmets signed by Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Dak Prescott, former greats Peyton Manning, Steve Young, John Elway, Brett Favre and Jim Kelly are among the former greats who have also contributed their signatures.
The online auction, which is being conducted on eBay, ends at 3 PM Sunday, Sept. 29. You can check out the listings here.
