Cleaning off the desk….
Funny story from MLB.com about Chipper Jones’ father Larry and his infatuation with Mickey Mantle.
Chipper, a minor leaguer in the Braves’ system during the early 1990s, was signing autographs at a baseball card show that featured Mantle as a headliner. It also set the stage for quite the unique collectible.
"I’ve got a signed Mickey Mantle baseball with his fingerprints in barbecue sauce," Larry Jones said. "He was eating barbecue, and Chipper walked up and asked, ‘Would you sign this for my dad?’ I’ve got it in plastic because I don’t want the barbecue sauce fingerprints to go off it. I’m going to leave it to my grandkids."
Topps is jumping all over the success and popularity of Kosuke Fukudome. The company says starting with 2008 Bowman Chrome, Fukudome’s rookie card will appear in all Topps/Bowman products.
Topps is also adding the Japanese sensation to its Allen & Ginter baseball in what it calls "limited quantity". A&G ships this week. Fukudome has also been inserted as an exclusive bonus to the 2008 Topps baseball complete set (hobby edition).
Donruss has produced some videos entitled "I am a Donruss Rookie Card".
Part II of the series has the company asking NFL rookies about collecting cards, their favorites and now being on their own trading card.
