Over 54 percent of the cards graded by PSA in 2023 were created in the last four years. According to data from Gem Rate, SGC’s totals were also dominated by 2020-2023 cards, with 50.8 percent making up the overall numbers. 47.3 percent of Beckett’s cards were from the last four years, with CSG at 49.3 percent.
Nearly half of those current era cards received 10s from PSA (48 percent) and 42.8 percent of the submissions at SGC were given the 10 rating.
Only about 10 percent of the overall submissions to PSA dated to 1979 or earlier. SGC still sees a significant number of pre-1950s material, with 12.2 percent of submissions there dating to the pre-1950 era. Beckett graded the fewest vintage cards of any of the four companies, with 5.6 percent of cards graded by the company in the last 12 months dating prior to 1980.

Heritage Auctions says it took in $1.76 billion in total sales last year. That’s the highest figure ever for the 47-year-old company.
The number encompasses all categories, with sports just a part of it. It represents a 22% increase over 2022.
“The past year has yet again proven the enduring enthusiasm of collectors and the ever-expanding universe of fascinating objects that fire the passion of our collector-clients,” says CEO and co-founder Steve Ivy.
One year after Heritage sold a Mint+ 9.5 1952 Topps Mantle for $12.6 million, the company sold a Mint 9 example for $4.5 million, the second most a sports card sold for at auction in 2023 and the fifth-highest price ever paid at auction for a sports card.
In that same August auction, Mantle’s New York Yankees home jersey worn throughout the 1958 season sold for $4.68 million to become the most valuable Mantle jersey ever sold at auction.
