What will the NBA’s decision to go back to leather basketballs on January 1 mean for the old synthetic balls that are being phased out?
It will take its place in history beside Charles O. Finley’s bright orange baseball idea and the NFL’s short-lived white football for night games in the 1950s. The synthetic basketball adopted by the NBA this season has been about as welcome as Allen Iverson at a Sixers’ Christmas party.
This week, commissioner David Stern made the call to dump the basketballs and go back to the traditional leather ball less than three months into the season. Now speculation is that the synthetic balls could become collectors items.
