There was a bit of a lull in the current market until Yasiel Puig came along. With or without Puig, though, collectors of modern products were anxiously awaiting 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter. When it finally arrived earlier this week, there was a whole lot of ripping going on.
Reasonably priced at $80-100, Ginter offers three hits, 24 packs and eight cards per box. It’s chock full of the usual mix of standard issue baseball subjects, plus a mix of other sports, history, entertainment and more. It’s often the non-baseball autographs that generate the most interest, especially if the subject is one we haven’t seen before.
With cases at around $1,000 it’s not unusual to see all levels of collectors and dealers ripping multiple boxes and cases while the product stays hot. Beyond the base and short print cards, it’s hard to gather a ‘set’ so much of that material is flipped. A check of eBay showed over 10,000 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter listings already online.
Early sellers have included 520-card ‘master sets with all single prints at $100; cases at around $1000, framed mini cards featuring the autograph of soccer legend Pele at $600-800 and the requisite Puig framed mini with a red ink autograph for a best offer of somewhere around $1900.
Here’s a real-time look at the ‘most watched’ 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter cards right now. Check back to keep track of what’s hot.
