The jersey worn in one of the greatest hockey victories of all time is going on the auction block and could fetch a record price.
Paul Henderson’s Team Canada jersey from the 1972 Summit Series win over the Soviet Union is in Classic Auctions’ current sale. Bidding opened Monday and is already nearing $70,000.
Henderson’s goal is the ‘shot heard round Canada’…an immensely important victory that Americans might compare to the 1980 U.S. Olympic victory over the USSR in Lake Placid.
Henderson, a hero for that goal, but who never attained fame in the NHL, is hoping the winner will loan it to the Hockey Hall of Fame, but it’s just as possible it’ll wind up in the hands of a private collector.
Henderson gave the jersey to the team trainer who sold it several years ago when he went through some tough financial times. The jersey has been the subject of several stories including this one in the Toronto Globe and Mail.
