Custom cleats worn and signed by a dozen major league players are on the auction block with proceeds benefitting minor leaguers.
MeiGray Auctions has partnered with More Than Baseball, a nonprofit organization that works on behalf of athletes who have yet to reach the big leagues.
Among the veteran players who have given cleats to the auction include Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove, former MVP Christian Yelich of the Brewers and Red Sox infielder Enrique Hernandez. Two pairs of shoes worn by Jazz Chisholm and another pair donned by Ke’Bryan Hayes during their rookie seasons are also among the lots expected to see notable attention.
All of the cleats were worn by the players between July and September during the 2021 season. All but one pair are game worn and all are autographed.
Stadium Custom Kicks designed the shoes, many of which carry a promotional message or colorful design dedicated to certain charities.
The minimum bid for each pair is $200.
More Than Baseball offers a resources to players including career services, financial guidance, released player support, education and scholarships.
“Currently, the average Minor League baseball player earns less than the federal minimum wage, yet must locate and pay for their own housing, and receives no financial or logistical support for nutrition and equipment needs,” they stated. “Furthermore, as 90% of Minor League ballplayers do not reach the Major Leagues, most never receive even minimal support after their playing careers are over.”
The auction runs will run for three weeks.
