More vintage baseball cards from Cuba and Latin America that were part the impressive collection of Richard Merkin are on the block this month.
Just a few months after someone paid $32,810 for a 25th Infantry 1916 baseball team panoramic photo that featured Bullet Joe Rogan, Dobie Moore and Oscar “Heavy” Johnson and a 1910 Punch Ty Cobb that for $13,773, Hake’s Americana is trotting out more Cuban cards and some vintage boxing memorabilia as part of their 203rd auction which closes June 21-13.
Among the items up for bid this time are 1910 Punch Joes Mendez, Sam Crawford and Bruce Petway cards; 1923-24 Billiken Oscar Charleston and Mack Eggleston; 1924-25 Aguiltas Cristobal Torriente and others. Other SGC graded/authenticated cards include a 1893 N266 Red Cross boxing near set of 24, 1928 Amatller Chocolate Spanish boxing card set, a 1949 Menko JDM 2 Japanese baseball player mask set and 1967 Topps Venezuelan Ritirado set.
Autographed photos authenticated by JSA included: Jack Johnson, Martin Dihigo, a Bob Feller/Satchel Paige double signed and a Chuck Klein/Lefty O’Doul.
Other stand-out items include: Ring magazine bound volumes from the Nat Fleischer Archives, 1885 Runners & Jockeys of America poster, Penfold golf ball advertising figure, Red Grange “Ice Man” early 1930s button, c. 1914-1917 Chicago American Giants real photo postcard with Rube Foster-John “Pop” Lloyd-Pete Hill, 1928 Pittsburgh Crawfords team photo with Josh Gibson, 1890-91 Young Ladies baseball club cabinet photo, George Kelly 1922 Tour of Japan signed contract, Minnie Minoso APBPA personally owned membership card, Roberto Clemente endorsed 1960s sneakers, 1920 & 1923 NY Giants baseball sterling silver passes, and a Hughie Jennings endorsement button.
