As the year winds down, we’re taking a look at the top-selling sports cards and memorabilia sold through major auction companies in 2018.
He’s been gone for over 20 years but Mickey Mantle is still setting records. Last spring, one of only six 1952 Topps Mantle cards graded 9 by PSA became the most expensive post-War trading card ever sold at auction when Heritage Auctions sold one for over $2.8 million. Consigned by Evan Mathis, the card more than doubled the previous record for a ’52 Mantle (an 8.5) and went for nearly ten times more than the last PSA 9 sold at auction in 2006.
Mantle items–and high-end ’52s in particular– dominated the top ten items sold by the Dallas-based company, a list that also included what became the most valuable Mantle jersey ever sold.
