His 1985 Topps rookie card may not be flying off store shelves, but a wax figure of Mark McGwire?
Better than Micheal Jordan.
For the first time in its 44-year history, the world-famous Hollywood Wax Museum sold some of its acclaimed, hand-sculpted wax figures and original costumes in an auction produced by Profiles in History.
There were six athletes included in the sale of life-sized figures once on display in southern California. The Muhammad Ali figure drew the highest bid, selling for $4250 but the McGwire statue finished a strong second, bringing in $3000.
The star-studded grouping included likenesses of top movie and TV stars, musicians, athletes, and other history-makers. The figures have been seen by millions of visitors to the Hollywood Wax Museum locations in Hollywood, Calif., and Branson, Missouri.
The highest bids in the auction were reserved for Jesus at the Last Supper and the four Beatles, which sold for over $28,000 combined.
Other sports statues sold included:
- Mike Tyson $2500
- Michael Jordan $2250
- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar $1500
- Tiger Woods $1400
- Joe Montana $1300
A portion of the profits will support efforts to preserve Hollywood’s historic Walk of Fame.
